Take It With You: Dispensers With Bags for Dog Waste Installed Around Town

Dispensers came from a gift, and bags secured through a grant.

There's no excuse for Edmonds dog walkers along Sunset Avenue anymore. Two new plastic bag dispensers for dog waste are now in place along that scenic stretch of road, a popular one for pets and their owners.

"The City of Edmonds finally can help remind dog owners that a clean city is a healthy city, and doggie poop dispensers and bags will soon be appearing throughout Edmonds," said Diane Buckshnis.

Buckshnis is a city councilmember who also co-founded Off Leash Area Edmonds (OLAE), a nonprofit group that helps clean up and take care of the city's popular dog park at Marina Beach. That area was the first to have dispensers for dog waste.

The bags are the result of work by Stormwater Engineer program manager Jerry Shuster and city recycling coordinator Steve Fisher. The secured a grant designated for storm water education that enabled the city to purchase 4,000  bags.

Custom Bioplastics also donated 10 dog dispensers to the City of Edmonds, a $600 savings.

In addition to the two on Sunset Avenue, dispensers will be placed at City Park, Yost Park, Mini Park at the ferry holding lanes, Pine Ridge Park and at the Interurban Trail near Lake Ballinger.

More dispensers, at additional sites, will be added in the future, said Buckshnis.

"Picking up after your dog not only makes all dog owners look responsible, but it helps keep our streams and creeks clean and—by extension—our lovely Puget Sound."
