Machinists Union Plans Annual Charity Fun Run in Everett

The Flight for Sight Fun Run & Walk to benefit Guide Dogs of America will be June 9.

EVERETT — The 11th annual Flight for Sight Fun Run & Walk will be June 9 in Everett.

The event includes 5- and 10-kilometer timed races on courses certified by U.S.A. Track & Field. There will also be a non-competitive one-mile walk.

The event is sponsored by the Women’s Committee at Machinists Union District Lodge 751. All proceeds will benefit Guide Dogs of America. The California-based charity provides guide dogs and instruction in their use free of charge to blind and visually impaired people from the United States and Canada.

The race day sign-in will be from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the courses’ start/finish line at the Everett Boeing Activity Center, 6098 36th Ave. W. The timed races will start at 9:30 a.m. with the walk to start at 9:45.

Regitration costs $25 if done before noon on June 7. Day-of-race registration will cost $30. Registration can be done online, and detailed information is also available at www.flightforsight.com.

Last year’s fun run raised $9,661 for Guide Dogs, part of the more than $263,000 raised by District 751, which made it the top contributor to the charity across North America. In all, the Women’s Committee has raised more than $106,000 for Guide Dogs of America since it launched the Flight for Sight run 11 years ago.

Originally formed in 1935 to represent hourly workers at the Boeing Co., District Lodge 751 of the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers now represents more than 31,000 working men and women at 45 employers across Washington, Oregon and California. In 2011, members of the Machinists Volunteer Program built their 300th wheelchair ramp while other volunteers collected more than $263,000 for Guide Dogs of America, the union’s charity of choice.
