Write on the Sound Announces Winners for 2011

Joanne Peterson of Edmonds wins an award for nonfiction.

The City of Edmonds Arts Commission and the Write on the Sound Writers’ Conference Steering Committee have announced the winners of its 2011 Writing Contest.

Entries were accepted from conference participants in fiction, nonfiction and poetry, reflecting the contest's 2011 theme: “Remnants.”

Kathleen Nicklaus from Florida won first place in fiction for Counting Sheep, while Ramona S. Neal of Idaho took second for The Leavings.

In nonfiction, Kathleen McClung from California won first place for Message in a Bottle and Joanne Peterson of Edmonds—who writes the "Home Again" column for the Edmonds Beacon—took second for You Were Always on My Mind.

In poetry, Kathleen Nicklaus was awarded first place for Something in a Stormy Night and Teresa Grabstein of Mercer Island won second for Storage Unit.

Contest awards were sponsored by Patricia Thorpe and Heather Krause of RBC Wealth Management.

According to Kris Gillespie, City of Edmonds cultural services assistant and manager of Write on the Sound, the 26th annual conference presented by the Edmonds Arts Commission Sept. 30-Oct. 2 saw a capacity crowd.

Participants came from all over the Pacific Northwest, as well as from California, Colorado, Hawaii, Michigan, Maryland, New York and Florida.

The 2012 Write on the Sound will be held October 5-7. Those interested can sign up for the mailing list or vist the Arts Commission's website.
