Shooting for the Stars: Young Musician Hopes to Win Rolling Stone Contest

Carly Calbero, who lives in Marysville and attended Edmonds Community College, could be performing at South by Southwest in 2012.

A young guitarist honing her chops in local clubs is looking for help from Snohomish County residents to send her to an even bigger stage: the famed South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival in Austin, TX.

Carly Calbero, who lives in Marysville and attended the Running Start program at Edmonds Community College for two years, is one of four finalists in Street to Stage, a contest sponsored by Rolling Stone magazine. Calbero was chosen after six weeks of voting and is competing to perform at the Rolling Stone Rock Room during SXSW.

The winner will be announced Oct. 19.

“I started playing guitar at 11, and I've been singing for my entire life, from choir throughout school,” said Calbero. “My goal is to play as many shows as I can, grow a strong fan base and eventually get signed by an indie record label. Or at least sign a deal that enables me to reach more people, but at the same time maintain control of my music.”

Calbero is playing music full time. She’s a regular at Sojen Cellars in in Everett. She has a full show at Columbia City Full Tilt Ice Cream on Oct. 28.

The Rolling Stone contest is for buskers, or street perfomers. Calbero does plenty of that.

“During the day, I usually play in downtown Seattle at Pike Place and outside of Pacific Place,” she said.

If you can’t catch Calbero live, you can see her videos on YouTube, Facebook and her official website.

You can also buy her third EP, Phantom-Like, which was released over the weekend.

To vote for Calbero, text "Street 5" to 99799 or go to a page dedicated to her at Rolling Stone.
