Edmonds Artist Finishes First Mural of 2011 Ahead of Schedule

Sue Coccia's "Flying Heron" can be seen on the wall of Housewares along Fourth Avenue South. Four more murals will be completed this summer, and Andy Eccleshall begins work this weekend on "The Brothers."

Sue Coccia is making a lot of new friends lately. That’s no surprise, as she just completed one of the city’s most visible residents this week as she finished the to brighten up the neighborhood this summer.

Coccia’s completed her mural, Flying Heron, this morning. You can see it on the wall of Housewares along Fourth Avenue South just before Main Street. The good weather sped along the mural's process, as it was originally scheduled to completed on Wednesday.

Coccia’s acrylic-paint artwork is sponsored by the Edmonds Mural Society, which is funded entirely by citizen donations and currently counts more than 200 members.

On a recent sunny day, Coccia’s work was on display as she worked with her husband, Frank Coccia, Carl Brecht of Coldwell Banker Bain on Fifth Avenue South and two 17-year-old volunteers from Meadowdale High School, Sami Sully and Haley Suarez.

“My flying heron is inspired by the Edmonds Marsh,” said Coccia, a professional artists who runs EarthArt International on C Avenue South in Edmonds. Many of the species found at the marsh are being painted inside the bird, who is flying alongside a bank of clouds and blue sky.

Sue Coccia is the mother of Gina Coccia, associate planner for the city of Edmonds. It was the younger Coccia who encouraged her mother to present the Edmonds Mural Society with her Flying Heron proposal.

This weekend, artist Andy Eccleshall will begin work on his mural The Brothers alongside the Papery, 410 Main St.
