World's Largest Snowball Fight Set for Saturday at Seattle Center

Organizers are trucking in 162,000 pounds of snow in an effort to break the Guinness World Record for the largest snowball fight.

Snow days are a special occurrence in Seattle. When the snowflakes actually stick around, people flock outdoors to hop on a sled, build a snowman, or even play the bagpipes on the Microsoft campus (eh, why not?).

Winter merriment will return to the area this Saturday, as thousands gather at Seattle Center to set a new Guinness record for world's largest snowball fight. But unlike other Seattle snow days, this one won't be left up to the weather.

Organizers plan to truck in about 162,000 pounds of snow—enough to fill 34 dump trucks—from the Cascades. Organizer Neil Bergquist told KPLU there will be an assembly line with front-loaders unpacking all the trucks. "Dump trucks will be coming in, one every 10 minutes for about five hours,” he said.

The existing record for largest snowball fight was set three years ago in South Korea and included 5,387 participants. The Seattle organizers hope to attract at least 6,000 people to Saturday's event.

In addition to the snowball fight at 5 p.m., the fun includes a snow castle building contest and celebratory pub crawl. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased through the event website (Just 250 tickets were left Monday, according to an announcement on Facebook.)

The snowball fight is a 21+ event. Proceeds benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of King County.

If you want to know what it's like to have your religion disrespected, try having school camps,Read More orchestra and band concerts and back-to-school nights on the holiest of your religious holidays (equivalent to Christmas and Easter). Everyone knows that an egg hunt is an Easter event whether it's called that or not. Everyone know that a holiday tree is really a Christmas tree. Trust me, the atheists and/or non-Christians are not trying to destroy Christianity. First, it would be impossible. Second, it would be too dangerous to us personally. Last, I personally respect other's traditions, but I'm not sure the same can always be said in reverse.

Don't we have more important things to worry about? Easter Egg, Egg Hunt, who cares? It's a funRead More community event. And thank you to the sponsers that make this happen.

First of all, the government is not supposed to promote any religion. Secondly, the Easter bunnyRead More and egg hunt has no historical religious significance that I can think of, even though this is part of an American tradition. I am good with deleting the word Easter, and would like to see a departure from any emphasis on candy, which only compounds the diabetic epidemic in this country. Sometimes it is good to rethink the wisdom of something simply because it is a "tradition".
