Costumes and Candy and Kids, Oh My! Downtown Edmonds Does Halloween

Merchants handed out candy, kids ran wild and everyone dances to the music.

On Halloween night, downtown Edmonds surged with kids, pets and parents all looking to get their hands into the candy jars at the annual Edmonds Chamber of Commerce Trick-or-Treat Halloween celebration.Β

With streets blocked off, dozens of merchants opened their doors and handed out candy as community members safely roamed the leaf-strewn streets with their children. Neighbors and friends greeted each other with laughter, and a DJ booth by the fountain spun tunes like the Ghostbusters theme song and the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive."

The kids were cute of course, but the real rivalry in costumes was between the adults and the dogs. Zombies, cowboys, ducks and the main characters from Disney's Shrek were among some of the parental choices. There were dogs dressed up as doctors, cabaret dancers, bumblebees (full disclosure, I put my dog Nikko in the black-and-yellow stripes, complete with wings) and even a banana split.Β

"This has turned into such a fun evening," said a noncostumed Kim Grant as she waited for her two grandkids to go through the line at the bakery. "It's such a great community, and everyone gets so into the holiday. It's nice that the merchants are willing to participate because it makes it that much more enjoyable for everyone."
