An Edmonds Kind of Encounter

You never know who you'll run into on the downtown streets of Edmonds. If you were at the fountain at about 10:30, you would have seen incoming Mayor Dave Earling and travel expert Rick Steves.

It wasn't a grand summit.

Just a friendly chance encounter by the fountain in downtown Edmonds on Friday morning between two of most well-known personalities in Edmonds: Dave Earling and Rick Steves.

Earling, a longtime local business owner and former councilman, will be sworn in as Edmonds' next mayor on Nov. 29 at 4 p.m. in the Plaza Room of the .

Steves is the owner of on Fourth Avenue North and a nationally known travel expert.

Steves, against incumbent Mike Cooper, carried a hot cup of Starbucks coffee on his walk back to his office. at the .

Earling was on his way to a meeting. He's now in the process of getting familiar with City of Edmonds staff, many of whom he's known since his tenure as a City Councilman from 1992 to 2003.

They chatted for a few minutes. Then, like lots of ordinary people in town, just went on with their days.
