What Color Is Your Halloween? This Year, It's Eek-O Friendly Green

Downtown Edmonds will be the site for an alternative celebration, Green Halloween, come Oct. 31.

When picturing Halloween, the color orange comes to mind. Think pumpkins.

But there's another color moving into the picture. This one is associated with eco-friendly activities and products: green.

For the second year in a row, downtown Edmonds will be celebrating Green Halloween, an event promoted as providing traditional Holloween festivities while providing healthy, fun and economical green ideas for kids and their parents.

The event is sponsored by Womentorz.com, along with several local businesses.

The nonprofit Green Halloween was started three years ago by Issaquah resident Corey Colwell-Lipson. In starting it, she cited widespread concern about childhood obesity, the discovery of chemicals and lead in store-bought costumes and accessories and the waste generated at Halloween.

“My son has a peanut allergy and Halloween has always been a very challenging time for us,” said Edmonds resident Melinda Knight, owner of Womentorz.com and a Green Halloween volunteer. “There’s so much that he can’t safely eat, and he usually feels left out from the festivities. This is why I feel it is important to give safe and healthy alternatives for parents who have children with dietary restrictions.”

Many of just those kinds of suggestions are available at Green Halloween's website, along with ways that those interested can participate.
