Free Event to Focus on Tsunami Debris, Crisis Facing World's Oceans

Author, scientist and activist Capt. Charles Moore will be the featured speaker at a free public even May 11 at the Edmonds Conference Center.

His talk is titled "Safeguarding Big Blue: Tsunami Debris, Gyres and Marine Feedlots." Moore, founder of the Algalita Foundation, has extensively researched the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which now includes tsunami debris soon reaching U.S. shores.

His recent book, Plastic Ocean, asks for a fundamental rethinking of the plastic age and growing global crisis oceans face.

Marine feedlots, coastal pollution and sustainable fisheries will be discussed by Alfredo Quarto of Mangrove Action Project and Anne Mosness, Blue festival organizer.

Also participating in this informative evening are Edmonds Community College LEAF program volunteers and community partners with information about their activities to ensure the health of our oceans and waterways.

The free event is May 11 from 6:45 to 9:15 p.m. at the Edmonds Conference Center, 201 Fourth Ave N, Edmonds.
